Leading change from within her community

Born in the Andean community of Juihuay, Mishjaky Paravecino grew up surrounded by coffee plants and the rhythm of rural life. Today, she works with the Andean Alliance and Yungas, leading the social dimension of our work: from strengthening women’s roles in coffee production to promoting access to healthcare and leadership training. Her goal: to build a more equitable and inclusive future for her people.

Getting into university in Peru is a privilege that few in rural areas can afford. Mishjaky remembers how her family made enormous sacrifices so she could study. Against all expectations — and despite pressure to choose a “safe” career like medicine — she followed her calling and studied Anthropology. What began as curiosity for the philosophical and human side of society became the foundation for her life’s mission.

University opened the door for her to lead social projects with Indigenous women, working directly with public institutions. Today, she’s back in her community — not as a student, but as a leader. Her story is proof that lasting change starts when those who know the challenges firsthand are the ones shaping the solutions.
